improving our analysis processes to enable even greater realism in predicting the behavior and performance of complex products.


Structural analysis is either linear or non-linear. Linear model analysis assumes that the material does not plastically deform (permanent deformation). Non-linear models consist of separating contact conditions (contact with lift-off), when stressing material past its elastic capabilities into the plastic range, or bending greater than 10% of model length (large deformation). At this point, material properties change and stresses in the material will vary with the amount of deformation.  Tangent recently employed significant FEA analysis on a novel tool for the oil and gas markets.  The analysis performed guided the detailed design of the product structural steel, ensuring the design would be able to withstand all the expected static and dynamic loading of the system.


The results of the analysis guided the engineering team to select and redesign key structural members, enabling a 10% reduction in overall material cost in the structural members and easing the day to day wear on moving load bearing components in the system.  In general, the application of an advanced software analysis system early on in the design cycle dramatically improved the overall system design and quality of design outputs.
